A Day at the Theme Park
By Jennifer Wozniak/Excursia

Spending a day at the theme park is a lot like going camping, in that, even though you will only be gone for the day, you need to pack certain items. Here's a few things to keep in mind before heading out.

Is There a Discount with That?
Many places sell theme park tickets at a discount. The savings can anyweher between a few dollars to the price equal to that of one ticket depending on the number of tickets you are purchasing. Organizations like credit unions and the Automobile Association of America (AAA) offer discount theme park tickets when bough through their organization. The Web site for AAA says a family of four can save $40 off the standard admission price on a two-day combo ticket to Sea World and Busch Gardens by purchasing tickets at any of AAA's branch offices.

The Orlando/ Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau Official Visitor Center offers discounts and tickets to more than 40 Central Florida Attractions. Another obvious benefit to purchasing tickets ahead of time; you don't have to wait in line.

What to Wear
Comfort is the key to enjoying yourself when at the theme park and summer is hands-down the most popular time to visit. People often wear shorts, short sleeve or sleeveless shirts, expecting the weather to be sunny and warm. However, if things don't

go as planned or if you stay later in the evening, be sure to bring a lightweight jacket or sweater. Something that ties around your waist will be handy and will help you avoid being overheated. It might be a good idea to wear shorts with snap or zipper-shut packets like those found on cargo pants. Another good idea when going on gravity-defying rides.

Dress msall children in distinctive or bright colored clothing, so they will be easily-spotted in a crowd.

Another concern is your feet. You'll be walking all day (when not on the rides) wear comfortable walking shoes or sandals.

So now you have your tickets and your dressed, so it's off to the theme park. Not so fast, better to plan some packing before you go. Here are a few things that you must include for yourself and make sure you have extra on hand for everyone in your family/party.

The Basics

  • Money and tickets if purchased ahead of time.
  • Medical insurance cards for you and your family (in case of emergencies)
  • Any medications
  • Sunscreen and a hat. After all, you will be walking around all day, mostly in the sun. Please put this on before you leave the house. You might want to make your sunscreen waterproof, especially if you know you are going to be going on water rides, this includes log rides and white-water rafting rides (you would be surprised how soaked you will get, even though you are not "in" the water.)
  • A wristwatch--this is a good item for everyone to have.
  • Water bottle, which you can fill up at water fountains at the park. Handy are the ones that comes with insulated cases and straps that you can cary on your shoulder and keep your drink cool. Another idea is a water pool that comes with a small fan that sprays a water mist when on. It helps to pacify overheated kids.
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimsuit and towel if visiting a waterpark , along with waterproof bag or plastic bags.
  • Quarters for any coin-operated lockers

If you have young kids, some extra items might include:

  • A Diaper bag with diapers, paper towels, and wet wipes‹especially useful for cleaning hands when there are no facilities nearby.
  • Snacks
  • A change of clothing for each child.
  • Baby stroller big enough for at least two small children.

A few other suggested, nice to have, items might be:

  • Stain stick
  • Camera with film and extra batteries
  • A small medical supply kit with bug repellent, bandages and ointments.
  • Backpack or duffel bag for extra items
  • Umbrella and rain jackets

A Few Other Tips:
Agree on a time and place to meet either for lunch or to leave for the day. Also designate a place for young kids to go in case they get separated from you. A good place is a park office or "lost children" center, where someone will help your kid find you. Never let your kid out of your sight, it's easy for a small child to get swallowed up in the large roving crowds like those at theme parks. Also, write down your name, address and phone or cell phone number, and place this piece of paper on your child. This information will be essential in case your child becomes lost.
